After-Hours Office Moves: How to Relocate with Zero Downtime

For most businesses, the real cost of an office move isn't the movers - it's lost work. Every hour staff can't reach their computers, files or clients costs money. That's why more Metro Vancouver businesses are choosing after-hours office moves: the office closes Friday afternoon and opens in the new space Monday morning.
What is an after-hours move?
An after-hours move happens outside your normal business hours - evenings, overnight, or weekends. The crew works while your office is closed, so staff and clients don't feel the disruption. It's common for:
- Law, accounting and finance offices that can't close on weekdays.
- Clinics and health offices with booked appointments.
- Retail and hospitality that run during the day.
- Downtown towers that only allow moves outside business hours.
How a zero-downtime move works
1. Walkthrough and plan. A commercial mover visits both spaces, counts workstations and equipment, and builds a timeline - often in phases by department.
2. Pre-pack during the week. Staff pack personal items and non-essential files in the days before. Crates are labelled with the new floor plan code.
3. IT disconnect at close of business. As soon as the office closes, workstations, monitors and peripherals are disconnected, labelled and packed.
4. Overnight or weekend move. Trucks are loaded, furniture is disassembled where needed, and everything moves to the new space. With a fleet of 3-ton and 5-ton trucks, the crew can run several loads at once.
5. Install and reconnect. Furniture is reinstalled, equipment placed at the right desk and reconnected.
6. Morning check. Before staff arrive, the crew and your coordinator walk the space to confirm everything is in place.
Phased moves for larger offices
Big offices don't have to move in one night. A phased move relocates one department or floor at a time over several evenings or weekends, so most of the business keeps running throughout. It also reduces risk: lessons from the first phase make the next one smoother.
Questions to ask an after-hours mover
- Do you have experience with commercial and office moves specifically?
- Can you handle IT disconnect and reconnect, or coordinate with our IT provider?
- Can you install and reinstall office furniture?
- Do you carry liability insurance and WorkSafeBC coverage, and can you provide a certificate to the building?
- Can you remove and dispose of furniture we're not keeping?
Don't forget the building
After-hours moves need building approval. Book elevators and loading docks at both locations, confirm security access for the crew, and check any noise rules for residential-mixed buildings.
